Like everyone in my generation, I can remember the first time I heard Dylan’s voice, Neil Young, J.J. Cale, Joni Mitchell—the music made me imagine myself. It was so evocative. It taught you nothing, but you felt you’d learned everything you needed to know. You would think, What kind of life might somebody have whose voice sounded like that?
